TheoryQuest/RHYTHM

Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences in music. Both the sounds and silences can last for different durations. Here are some basic rhythm duration:

Note
Duration (in beats)
Rhythm Reading Syllable (Name)

1 beat of sound
"ta" (Quarter Note)
1/2 beat of sound
"ti" (Eighth Note)
1 beat of sound
"ti-ti" (Beamed Eighth Notes)
2 beats of sound
"toh" (half note)
4 beats of sound
"hold-that-whole-note" (whole note)
1 beat of silence
"shh" (quarter rest)

Try putting some of these notes together to make a rhythm. Just use your math skills: how many ways can you think of to put notes in groups of four beats? After you make a rhythm, try speaking it with rhythm reading syllables.
